PTD Ansaldo 1936 Large Cruiser Tirreno

A 1936 Ansaldo project for a large 27,000 ton cruiser for the Soviet Union. It would have had 9-10”,  6-135mm guns and been able to sail at 35knots. Finished as used by the Italians with 8-90mm, 10-65mm and six TT.

SL-85. Italian Feratti G’ Battleship “Augustus” 1942………$27

PTD Ferrati G' Augustus 1

This 35,000 ton iteration of the Feratti design had 16-15” guns and would have gone 27 knots.
As designed they had a 270mm armored belt and a mere 50mm deck, which likely would have been thickened in modernization.
The planned secondaries of 16- 7.5” guns has been replaced here with 18-5.3” in triple turrets and 12-90mm AA.
She is a powerful add to any Italian squadron!

SL-82 US 1931 Battleship Scheme GB-X USS Maine……………..$25.00

IMG_1846

The 1931 Battleship Design Scheme GB-X was part of a series designed with 9-12” as part of the British push for smaller battleships but an alternative armament was 8-14” which is what the Maine has here. Not a fast girl, she would have done 25-26 knots but was 32,500 tons and had 13” belt armor.
She has four twin 37mm mounts in her light AA mix; the USN was working on a 37mm AA gun in the late 20’s but little is known about it.

IMG_2392

This is a US Battlecruiser design from mid 1935. She has 6-14” guns on a 650’hull, 24,000 tons and would have done 30 KTs. The design was done in anticipation of similar proposals from Great Britain.  I happened upon this one as a passing mention in Norman Friedman’s “US Battleships: A Design History” where it was mentioned that  based on the “1931 Fast Battleship design”

PTD SL5 Minnesota

The USS Minnesota is a Fast BB proposed in 1934 with 9-14″ rifles in three triple turrets and 12-5″ guns in twin turrets. She was designed for 30kts at 35000 tons with excellent protection comparable to the later fast BBs (13″ belt, 4.5″-5″ on the decks). A sketch can be found in Norman Friedman’s book “US Battleships : An Illustrated Design History” on page 234.

This is a “what if” build of the proposed update to the 10″ gunned armored cruiser. In the 1920′s it was proposed to install oil burning boilers (new speed 26-28kts) and reconfigure the armament. This model takes it one step further with the remaining casemate 6″ guns replaced by twin 6″ turrets.

SL-50   US Destroyer Leader 1928 Scheme 7……………………….$8.00

Friedman’s Destroyer Design history discusses this concept briefly but no drawing has emerged. This is my  take on US 1928 Destroyer leader design, Scheme 7. She is 2900 tons, four-6″, four 5″/25 and 12 TT and over 400′ long. At 36kts, she would have been a close competitor of the Le Fantasque class and the Yubari.

  1. Wonderful work!! I am searching for model of the US Auk-class minesweeper, in any small scale. Do you have any suggestions?
    Thank You, Steve Bellofatto, S2bello@att.net

  2. Is there a possibility of getting a WW2 version of the SL-28 (US 110′ Subchaser (1918) WW1 version with 3″/23) as they were configured in 1942 with a 40mm Bofors replacing the 3″ gun forward and 3 20mm guns aft in 1/1200?

    • Hi Kent,
I have been thinking of this one along with a number of small YP patrol types. Let me check the master.

  3. Can you do the ‘what if’ 1940 Dutch battlecruiser design in 1/1200?

    • Hi Glenn,
I’ll consider it. Alnavco did one and it should be due for re-release. I try to stay away from Never Were models that they do

I am almost done with a conjecture of another large cruiser project the Dutch had, a very heavy cruiser with 9-9.2″ guns . Have not decided on molding it yet but I am open to it.

  4. Hi there,

I was doing research on an old yacht and saw that you posted on the Axis History forum back in 2004 about it. I was wondering if you found any reference for the Campeador V (1938-1940).

    Many Thanks
